Fall is the time of year when Cross Lake camp owners are removing their docks and boat lifts, and you may find something like this photo on those or on a stick or plant under the water. It's a colony of Pectinatella magnifica or magnificent bryozoan. Although strange looking, these bryozoan colonies are GOOD for the lake, as they can increase water clarity by removing large quantities of suspended material including, diatoms, suspended ALGAE, and inorganic clay/silt, so please put the colonies back in the water. They also require CLEAN WATER! You can read more here What are the jelly-like blobs under my dock?
